The CFMEU’s Victorian secretary John Setka has been placed on a one-year good behaviour bond after pleading guilty to two criminal charges.

The Melbourne Magistrates’ Court heard the 54-year-old had used a carriage service to harass and breached a court order late last year.

The court heard the harassment included dozens of text messages and phone calls.

Setka’s lawyer, Marcus Dempsey, told the court his client had never threatened violence, but Magistrate Belinda Wallington replied: “It’s still nasty behaviour.”

“The misogynistic language is what’s causing me concern,” Magistrate Wallington said.

Mr Dempsey said the public scrutiny of his client had been “ubiquitous” and had affected him “adversely”.

“To be demonised the way that he has, has been a punishment in itself,” Mr Dempsey told the court.

Setka has also been ordered to donate $1,000 to an Aboriginal legal service.

More to come.
