The distraught family of a US university student who was fatally mauled by sharks while on vacation in the Bahamas say they were powerless to stop the attack because it “happened so fast”.

Key points:

  • Jordan Lindsey suffered severe injuries and died in hospital on Wednesday
  • The college student has been remembered as a “great daughter and person”
  • Her family has since started a GoFundMe page to cover funeral expenses

Jordan Lindsey, 21, was snorkelling near Rose Island on Wednesday afternoon (local time) when she was fatally attacked by three sharks, the Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed.

She suffered bites to her arms, legs and buttocks and her right arm was bitten off, authorities said.

She was pronounced dead at a hospital in New Providence a short time later.

Speaking to the American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Michael Lindsey said his daughter had been snorkelling with her mother on another part of the island when the attack occurred.

“My wife was near Jordan, a few feet away, when the shark attacked,” he said.

“She said it happened so fast and no-one yelled anything.”

“My wife got to Jordan and pulled Jordan to shore by herself.

“[She said] said no-one told her there were three sharks.”

Ms Lindsey, who has been remembered as “a great daughter and person”, would be missed terribly, her father added in a statement.

Her family has since started a GoFundMe page, writing that the money would be used to cover funeral costs and expenses related to transporting her body back to California.

Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where Ms Lindsey was studying communications, shared its condolences for the “devoted animal lover and climate change advocate”.
